Product Number One: Ambri has developed the Ion Channel Switch (ICS ™) Technology which is a patented, self assembling synthetic bio-membrane. This is one of the world's first true 'bio nano' devices and has a wide and varied potential of applications in which benefit from rapid, quantitative biosensing. Each chip can do several tests at the same time. The entire testing happens on this tiny disposable chip. The chip can be read on a small hand held reader. The ICS* Chip sensor has a digital output which is read and analyzed using proprietary electronics and software. The electronics may be inserted into small handheld readers, desktop reader or large automated laboratory machines. Ambri has used a desktop SensiDx* System concept to evaluate the reader (including the electronics and software) in a hospital Point of Care setting. Hospital trials showed SensiDx* System had a very easy-to-use interface that guides the user through the testing process and integrated well into the Hopital Laboratory Information Systems. At present, the development of the SensiDx* System has been suspended to concentrate resources on the development of the next generation ICS* Chip format. Many of the algorithms, software and other features of the SensiDx* Analyzer will be incorporated into future readers/ analyzers developed by Ambri for use with the ICS* Sensor. Currently 6 tests are under development - these tests will be developed as product concepts using Ambri's ICS™ Chip platform, in order to develop industry interest and partnering opportunities. Product Number Two: The Dupont company's main focus is scientific and technological innovation. It was one of the world's leading suppliers of materials to the electronics and engineering industries, particularly the ceramic and polymeric thick film materials. The company uses science to create sustainable solutions essential to a better, safer, healthier life for people everywhere. Operating in more than 70 countries, DuPont offers a wide range of innovative products and services for markets including agriculture, nutrition, electronics, communications, safety and protection, home and construction, transportation and apparel. Their newest innovation deals with printable conductive thick film materials for use in Biosensors. These materials are specifically used for medical monitoring, diagnostics, drug delivery, food and beverage testing, and environmental sensors. The thick film materials are used to build microelectronic circuitry and to generate most electrical functions. They are applies by screen printing and then cured or fired to produce the final circuit. Layers can be printed on top of one another to build complete circuits. This process is suitable for generating features of small dimensions, and since the materials are so versatile, many have been used in a variety of sensor applications, one of which are biosensors. Task Two: Identify one professional association or trade organization associated with the products your team identified. Include: its name, description of its mission, and number of people/companies involved. AAO-HNS or, The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, is an association closely related to our True Voice product. They are the world's largest organization representing specialists who treat the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. The Academy represents more than 10,000 otolaryngologist--head and neck surgeons who diagnose and treat disorders of the ears, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. The medical disorders treated by our physicians and this specialty are among the most common that afflict all Americans, young and old. They include chronic ear infection, sinusitis, snoring and sleep apnea, hearing loss, allergies and hay fever, swallowing disorders, nosebleeds, hoarseness, dizziness, and head and neck cancer. The AAO-HNS Foundation works to advance the art, science and ethical practice of otolaryngology--head and neck surgery through education, research, and lifelong learning. Task Three: Propose and describe a new product or new process based on your team's NCT technical application. In our product, biosensors are used to detect bacteria that has embedded itself in the laryngectomy patient's trachea. However, biosensors can be used for a plethora of other advancements in technology dealing with the medical field. One device, for example, may be used to act as a monitoring system for patients with heart disease. The biosensor could be implanted in or around the heart or could flow through the blood stream, and it would be able to sense when the patient's health was in immediate jeopardy. Perhaps it would not be able to tell exactly what was wrong with the patient, but it would be able to tell, to a certain point, the level of danger the person was in. It could then send a signal to the patient's healthcare professional or even emergency services, depending on the degree of risk. Task Four: Via the Internet, locate a cpmpany that might be able to manufacture your team's proposed product. Send the company and e-mail asking that someone in the company evaluate the product your team proposed. From: m.finfrock@att.net [ mailto:m.finfrock@att.net ] Best Regards Mark -------------- Original message from "Taradash_Leah" <leatar@bergen.org>: -------------- We are members of Mrs. Rios's tenth grade technology class that are currently working on a project for the Internet Science and Technology Fair (ISTF). The product that we are creating deals with those suffering from laryngectomies and the consequences that this procedure ensues. Our specific focus regards the bacteria and infections that can enter the patient's trachea trough the hole that is created afetr the procedure. Our idea is to produce a decorative voice ornament that will be placed over the hole located on the patient's throat. The device will control the air flow and minimize the amount of bacteria entering the trachea. We will use a biosensor to to detect and bacteria in the trachea. When researching for this project we came across your company and felt that you would be very useful in evaluating our proposed product since you deal with manufacturing other products of this kind. Please note that this is just a proposed idea for this fair and will not actually be produced. Back to Top |
