kioulaphides.jpgTonight’s guest speaker Victor Kioulaphides will present: "Writing for Plucked Instruments: The Voice(s) Inside" Both the guitar and the mandolin came to the concert stage rather late, and from a long history in folk music, Spanish and Italian respectively. Since the beginning of formal composition for these two instruments, they have both been treated in an effective, yet also limited manner: guitar methods and manuals taught the student mostly how to play chords; mandolin methods taught one how to play a single line with tremolo. Yet both instruments have infinitely richer capabilities. While chords on the guitar and melody in tremolo on the mandolin will always be effective, there is a wide variety of other musical opportunities for them. This lecture will focus on polyphonic, multi-layered writing for plucked instruments, inviting and encouraging performers and composers to listen to the "voice(s) inside". Doors open 6:30. Presentation 7:00-7:45. $10 donation, free for NJGMS members. In the event of inclement weather please call on the day of the event.
